Informal Care and Recession in Europe

The paper investigates how the demand for and provision of informal care changed during and after the recession in Europe using data from the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). The analysis shows that the economic downturn was associated with a marked increase in informal care receipt and the opportunity cost of potential carers appears to be one of the main factors determining the increase.
